Retired president Uhuru calls for Jubilee Party crisis meeting to stem fallout
Retired president Uhuru Kenyatta and the Jubilee Party leader has called for a crisis party meeting to stem internal fallout between two rival factions that have threatened to collapse the once vibrant ruling party that has degenerated to a weakling political outfit.
In a notice signed by the party leader, the party will hold its Special National Delegates Conference on May 22, 2023.
According to the notice, the agenda of the conference as to review, formulate and approve party policies; receive a status report from the National Executive Committee and consider and approve any other matters.
“Pursuant to articles 8.1 and 10.1 of the Jubilee Party Constitution, notice is hereby issued for Special National Delegates Convention to be held on the 22 of May 2023.” The notice led in part.
This comes days after dramatic violent scenes played out at the party headquarters in Kileleshwa forcing Uhuru to go to the rescue of the Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni.
The rival faction led by the East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA) legislator Kanini Kega, nominated Member of Parliament Sabina Chege and Eldas MP Aden Keynan unsuccessfully tried to evict the Kioni team from office forcing police to intervene after the situation degenerated to a full blown violent engagement.
Also, Kega team has also unsuccessfully tried to takeover party leadership as the bonafide party officials.
Earlier this week, when Uhuru visited the party offices in Kileleshwa, the former president expressed displeasure over the turn of events.
The Jubilee Party’s National Executive Council made changes on February 9, 2023, replacing Kioni with Kega.
The Registrar of Political Parties approved the changes, but the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal overturned them.
