Police officer guarding bank arrested for displaying how to handle rifle in public
Muriithi showed his practical skills of loading and unloading his gun
Detectives in Kiserian, Kajiado County are investigating an incident where a police officer attached to the Critical Infrastructure Unit (CIPU) stalled traffic along the busy Kiserian Road while intoxicated.
Reports indicate that the officer identified as Lewis Muriithi, who had been assigned to guard Equity Bank’s Kiserian branch, took an unknown alcoholic brand before he abandoned his work and walked to the middle of the busy road to showcase his gun skills throwing a free exhibition for all.
In the incident, Muriithi showed his practical skills of loading and unloading the rifle that he had.
This caused panic within the Kiserian market as the residents feared he would fire shots.
“Lewis Muriithi attached to Kajiado West CIPU and deployed on guard duties at equity bank Kiserian became intoxicated with probably unknown brand of liquor and left his guard duties at the said bank and stepped at the centre of the busy Ngong-Kiserian road stalling traffic flow by wielding his Ceska rifle while throwing free for all exhibition, showing his practical musketry skills of loading and unloading the riffle while being drunk and staggering causing panic within the surroundings of the commercial facility and other business owners,” the police explained in a statement.
Officers from the Kiserian police station arrived at the scene and disarmed their colleague.
He was then escorted to the station, where he was subjected alcoblow test to determine his level of intoxication.
The incident comes amid concerns over the rise in the number of cases of police officers shooting their colleagues and even the public.
The recent cases have been on the rise, especially among officers attached to senior politicians and people with high ranking in the society.
The officers are accused of turning violent especially when they are intoxicated after taking alcohol in local bars or police canteens.
In some cases, mental health issues has also contributed to the shootings.
