Pilot killed in Kwale military plane crash Major Amondi led KDF parade on Madaraka Day in Homa Bay

Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) instructor Major Evander Ochieng Amondi and his student Lieutenant DM Nzuva were today killed after their aircraft, a Grob 120A model crashed in Viramboni village, Ndavaya, Kwale county today.

Major Amondi led a group of pilots in a fly-past event at the Madaraka Day celebrations on June 1, 2025, in Homa Bay.
The cause of the accident is yet to be known. The plane with registration KAF 718 crashed, killing all on board, witnesses said.
According to flight records, the ill-fated aircraft departed Mombasa at 11:39 am and was last seen near Diani before disappearing from radar.
It crashed at approximately 12:06 pm, about 27 minutes after takeoff.
“Earlier today, June 14, 2025, a Kenya Air Force Grob 120A aircraft experienced an emergency while on a training flight in the general area of Mwakijembe Primary School, Ndavaya, Kwale County. On Board were two pilots. Recovery is ongoing,” KDF said in a statement.
They were under the KDF’s Aviation Centre of Excellence, and they both died on the spot.
Major Amondi had trained dozens of KDF pilots before his demise, his colleagues said.
The aircraft belonged to the Kenya Air Force and was based in Mombasa for training purposes. It crashed in Mafundani village after takeoff from Mombasa International Airport.
