NEMA suspend registration of Environmental Assessment Experts to pave way for audit of register

The National Environment Management Authority has suspended the registration of new Environmental Assessment Experts to pave way for the forensic audit of the existing register, Nema Director General Mamo B. Mamo has said.

In a quick dispatch to newsrooms this morning, Mamo said that the audit and streamlining of the register will take place between January to July 2023.

So far, there are 6,000 registered Environment Assessment experts registered.

However, there are fears that a number of them hold bogus academic papers and others may be non-existent.

The DG explained that the audit of the register has also been necessitated after a review of annual experts practicing license register showed that less than 50 per cent of the registered experts are in practice.

He however clarified that during the suspension period, issuance of annual practising license for registered experts shall continue.
