Narok girls get trained on dealing with FGM-related trauma
Twenty girls from Narok County who survived Female Genital Mutilation have undergone training on dealing with trauma.
The workshop ‘scars to stars emotional well-being project’ is facilitated by USAID and AfyaAfrica non-governmental organisations in partnership with the Maa women professionals.
Narok Education and Gender County Executive Member Ms Cicilia Wepali encourage the girls to concentrate on the future.
“Be focused, never feel like you are neglected or did a wrong thing, or you don’t know why such things befell you.
Be a woman who can be embraced by the community by being a mentor to other girls who are undergoing stress because of FGM,” she said.
AfyaAfrica executive director Catherine Mootian said the training would ensure that the girls who have already been scared by FGM get a chance to heal and have a near-normal life just like any other girl in the community.
“We have been concentrating on asking girls not to undergo the cut – but what happens to those who have already undergone the cut and are traumatised?” wondered Ms Mootian.
Mootian observed that 78 percent of girls in the Maa community had undergone the cut, according to statistics from the department of gender.
