Nairobi’s Mutuini Hospital set for level 5 status upgrade in 2025
According to Mutuini Chief Executive Officer Fredrick Obwanda, the expansion will also see the hospital enhance outpatient services, ensuring patients from across the city receive health services.

An increase in the number of patients seeking services at Mutuini Hospital will soon see it upgraded to a level-five facility.
The facility, which is set to undergo a massive expansion this year, has a four hundred-bed capacity ward under construction which is now set to increase its capacity.
According to Mutuini Chief Executive Officer Fredrick Obwanda, the expansion will also see the hospital enhance outpatient services, ensuring patients from across the city receive health services.
“The hospital is set to undergo a massive expansion this year, elevating it to a Level 5 facility. We have a new 400-bed facility that is being constructed, and this will be huge as we currently have 40 beds only. When completed, we shall have a more expanded outpatient department, ensuring that we serve more patients efficiently,” Obwanda explained to The Informer Media Group.
“With 30 doctors currently serving the hospital, we are experiencing a growing number of patients, and this expansion will enable us to meet the increasing demand,” he added.
The upgraded hospital will include critical units such as an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), a High Dependency Unit (HDU) for pediatric, neonatal, and adults, expanded laboratories, a larger pharmacy, an imaging unit, a theatre, a newborn unit, a gynecology department, a renal unit, a nutrition clinic, and a specialised physician care clinic.
Once the expansion is completed, Mutuini Hospital will play a crucial role in decongesting major referral hospitals in the county, offering specialized treatment closer to the people.
The ambitious project has been backed by Governor Johnson Sakaja’s administration allocating Ksh 238 million in the 2024/2025 budget to facilitate the expansion.
