Nairobi hosts 21st Conference of Commonwealth Education Ministers meeting

Education Ministers from the Commonwealth countries are meeting in Nairobi for two days to debate critical education objectives.

The high-level 21st Conference of Commonwealth Education Ministers (CCEM) which will be held between April 27th and 28th is sought to offer hope to their growing vast youthful populations have turned their attention to wide-scale and practical answers to the learning problem engulfing their country.

Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha is expected to lead the Kenyan delegation to the meeting taking place at a Nairobi hotel.

“The COVID-19 pandemic brought education systems across the world to a near standstill. Low-income countries were especially hit hard. With the future of our children and young people on the line, we need to work together to build back better and refocus on investing in inclusive and equitable quality education,” he said.

The summit follows an unprecedented era in which governments around the world closed schools and educational institutions to assist curb the spread of Covid-19.

The pandemic caused significant disruption and uncertainty in the school sector, exacerbating low learning outcomes and exacerbating socio-economic inequities already present in educational outcomes.

Teachers from Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE), actors from higher education, and members of civil society groups will also be in attendance.

“Rethinking education for innovative work and sustainability post-Covid -19,” is the focus for this year’s meeting.

Participants will concentrate on crucial areas of educational recovery during the program.

Other areas of focus, apart from post-Covid-19, include digital transformation, effective governance and the transition from education to work.

A ministerial panel on regional views and goals, a panel on research, evidence and policy around major sub-themes, a ministerial Roundtable and Lessons learned from Covid-19 mitigation and recovery initiatives are among the events scheduled for today.

The meeting follows a previous one conducted last year, at which ministers agreed to providing inclusive and equitable quality education and encouraging possibilities for lifelong learning for all.

The meeting will also provide an opportunity to discuss crucial aspects of member states’ response to the Covid-19 outage.

The summit will also build on pledges made toward achieving long-term development objectives.

The Commonwealth Education and Learning Agenda and its Relationship with Other Sustainable Development Priorities is the most important platform for discourse.
