Pangani police station has the highest number of extrajudicial killing cases in Kenya
Pangani Police station has the highest number of police killing cases in the country, this is according to a report by Missing Voices.
The organization that has documented extrajudicial killings countrywide indicates that in the year 2021, the police station based in Nairobi had a case of police killings reported every month with the exception of the month of June.
The report further tabulates police killings and enforced disappearances to stand at 219 cases for the year 2021.Out of the 219 cases 187 were police killings while 32 were enforced disappearance.
“At least 500 people have died in the hands of police officers. In 2019, there was a record case of 145 cases of police killings while in 2020 had at least 168 people were killed or disappearing in police custody,” data by the organization shows.
The Missing Voices team identified that a majority of cases are unable to proceed successfully following the bangled up initial investigations.
The organization established that despite the police having witness statements, post-mortem reports and suspected police officers identified, cases implicating police officers were thrown out of court.
The organization is also seeking for a better criminal justice system which will ensure that the dispensation of justice is made easier and the gaps in law are worked upon in order to ensure that Kenyans are served well.
Apart from working on the gaps in the Judicial system the organization is seeking for a better implementation of the Witness Protection Act.
The constant case delays have also been identified as a weak link between the prosecution of the cases and the call to justice.
