Nairobi, health stakeholders launch toolkit to address maternal mental health

The new toolkit is expected to directly address these barriers by equipping frontline healthcare providers and Community Health Promoters (CHPs) with simple, effective and evidence-based strategies for screening, prevention and care

The Nairobi City County Government launched the ‘ Perinatal Mental Health Toolkit in support for mother’s mental health.

Developed in collaboration with the Summit Study, the toolkit is expected to bridge gaps in maternal mental health across mothers in the city.

“Perinatal mental health conditions, particularly depression and anxiety, are highly prevalent in Kenya. This evidence-based resource is set to significantly bridge the gaps in maternal mental healthcare across the county,” Nairobi City County Chief Officer for Public Health Tom Nyakaba stated.

According to Nyakaba, with the City County adopting the strategy, it shall play a vital role in taking a step toward ensuring that no mother faces her journey alone, thereby building healthier, more resilient families and communities.

This comes even as access to specialised care remains limited due to stigma and resource shortages.
