Nairobi doctors issue strike threats beginning tomorrow over delayed salaries, stalled promotions

This has been announced by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Union (KMPDU).
The medics have reiterated that they do not choose to strike but circumstances force them to as they are incapacitated by the county adding that they must be valued and supported by the administration.
“All Nairobi County doctors will down their tools tomorrow midnight due to illegal salary stoppages and dismissals, chronic salary delays, stalled promotions, unpaid gratuities, and delayed confirmation letters,” KMPDU said in a statement.
“We don’t choose to strike. How can we care for patients when we are deliberately incapacitated? Doctors must be valued, supported, and empowered to serve,” they added.
The strike by the Nairobi County medics comes after KMPDU Secretary General Davji Atellah issued a 30-day strike notice to the Ministry of Health over the unresolved matters involving intern doctors.
Atellah gave the ministry 30 days to ensure intern doctors are posted and receive their Sh206,000 salaries as per the 2017 Collective Bargaining Agreement and not the recently gazetted Ksh 70,000 by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC)
“We are giving the government 30 days to solve this issue of payment and posting of medical interns. Otherwise, on 18 next month, we will start a series of weekly demonstrations,” the KMPDU SG stated.
The notice by the SG came after Health CS Deborah Mulongo said during the 2025 Health Summit that intern doctors would be paid Ksh 70,000 in contrast to the Ksh 206,000 of the 2017 CBA.
Atellah warned that tampering with the medic’s salary would attract serious consequences.
“Anytime you touch our salaries, you are inadvertently giving yourselves a strike notice as the government. CS Barasa, consider it served,” stated the KMPDU boss in a statement on X.
