Mystery deaths, mine tragedy rock Coast and Migori
Three deaths, three mysteries: Engineer found dead, man drowns as mine claims miner.
A roads engineer was found dead in a Malindi hotel bathroom, a man was retrieved from the ocean in Mombasa, while a mine collapse in Migori claimed a life in a grim series of incidents reported across the country.
Bernard Gladstone Wangusi was found lifeless in the bathroom of a Malindi hotel room where he had spent the night.
Wangusi, who was travelling with colleagues from Lamu, checked into the hotel at about 6:15pm on Thursday, September 3.
But at about 9:50am the following day, his driver arrived to take him to Malindi Airport only to find him unresponsive.
Police and Crime Scene Investigation officers from Malindi rushed to the hotel and documented the scene.
Investigators said there were no visible injuries on Wangusi’s body, leaving the cause of his sudden death unclear.
His body was taken to Malindi Star Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem as detectives probe the circumstances surrounding the death.
Man found floating in ocean
In Mombasa, a 43-year-old man was found dead in ocean waters at Manyani, with police suspecting drowning.
The body of Hamisi Juma was spotted floating in the water by residents, who retrieved it before police arrived.
Preliminary investigations showed that Juma had been seen the previous night at a local mnazi drinking den, where he reportedly appeared heavily intoxicated and disturbed.
His body was discovered in the nearby ocean the following morning.
Police are investigating how he ended up in the water, although initial indications point to possible drowning.
The body was moved to the Coast General Hospital mortuary pending an autopsy.
Miner killed in collapse
In Migori, a 60-year-old miner died and four others were injured after a section of a mine collapsed in Karosi, Kuria West.
The workers were operating inside the mine, which is about 100 metres deep, when part of the mine wall suddenly caved in, burying them under debris.
Other workers mounted a rescue operation and pulled their colleagues from the rubble before rushing them to nearby health facilities.
The injured workers were initially treated at Kurutyange Hospital before being referred to Migori County Referral Hospital. They were reported to be in stable condition.
However, one miner, identified as Chacha, alias Kimeme Kuria, succumbed to injuries sustained in the collapse.
His body was taken to Kehancha Sub-County Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem.
Police said the mine is located on land operated by a businessman who reported the incident at Kehancha Police Station.
The incident was recorded as a death-in-the-mine report as investigations continue into what caused the collapse.
