The skyrocketing wave of armed attacks in the city has spiraled to most guarded areas in the Kenya’s capital inhabited by High Net Worth Individuals (HNWIs), diplomats and powers that be.
Last night, an armed eight-man gang of armed robbers successfully invaded the residence of billionaire-industrialist Manu Chandaria and robbed the family of Sh600,000 and jewellery of unknown amount.
The residence, Muthaiga 52 was breached after an armed Administration Police officer was allegedly disarmed his G3 rifle before the attackers gained entry.
The area is inhabited by the most affluent and is always under 24 hours police surveillance.
In a swift police response under the command of Nairobi Police Commander Yakub Rashid, the threat was neautralised and no one was injured during the incidence.
However, detectives attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have launched investigations to establish whether it was a case of collusion or just a normal robbery as a result of negligence of the officers.
Such attacks have not been common in the area where several prominent individuals including former President Mwai Kibaki, Mama Ngina Kenyatta and businessman Jimmy Wanjigi among others reside.
In 2013, former Kamkunji legislator and prominent businessman Maina Wanjigi and his wife Wambui Wanjigi were attacked by robbers at their Karen residence.
They were left nursing burn wounds inflicted on them by four gunmen after a horrifying raid and torture.
The two were burnt using electric box trying to force them to open the safe.
The then preliminary police investigations indicated the armed attackers gained entry into the residential home through the kitchen door which was reportedly left open at the time of the attack at 9.30pm.
They robbed off Sh17,000 and two firearms, a Revolver and a pistol and unknown number of ammunition.
According to police records registered under OB.50.2.11.2013, detectives were not furnished with the serial numbers of the lost firearms.
Also, police could not immediately establish the make of the lost pistol.
A house-help and security guards on duty at the time of the attack were questioned by the police as part of the preliminary police investigations.
“He alleges that his (firearm) certificates are at his office.” Part of the police records reads.
There were admitted at a Nairobi hospital in a stable condition and later discharged.
The motive and those behind the attack widely described as “disturbing” could not immediately be established.
Initially, police narrowed investigations into a possible inside job attack plot after it emerged the attackers were dressed in SGS security firm uniforms that are identical to the ones used by the private security group that guards the house.
The house-help and guards on duty were questioned.
It was also not clear why the kitchen door was left open at that time of the night.
The four gunmen just walked in the table room armed with pistols and pangas where the couple was sitting.
