Mukuru kwa Njenga community calls on government to suspend William Kangethe’s appointment

Mukuru kwa Njenga community have called on to the government to suspend the appointment of the new Nairobi regional commissioner William Kangethe Thuku over allegations of taking part in the estate’s demolitions.

Through an open letter to the Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho, the residents highlighted that there are ongoing investigations against Kangethe for ordering the demolitions when he was Deputy Director General of Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS).

“We are concerned that there is a likelihood that RC Kangethe is likely to interfere with investigations into the demolition of the estate,” they said.

They further urge that the appointment should be halted until the resettlement of the community has been completed according to the directive given by the President through the Ministry of Interior.

“We express our concerns of the appointment as the Regional commissioner before completion of the investigations that were looking into his role in the demolition of the settlement,” it stated.

Demolitions began in 10th October 2021 and went on till November when when it was stopped by Director General had been commissioned by Kangethe when he was serving as Deputy Director of NMS.

“On the stopping of the stopping of the demolitions, we were informed by the Director General NMS that investigations will be undertaken to determine who had ordered the demolitions and disciplinary measures would be taken against the masterminds of the demolition,” read the letter.

Kangethe was inexplicably made appointed as the Chief Administrative Secretary for Police Correctional Services on 17th of December 2021.
