Police chief Douglas Kanja now says he will honour court summons

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has promised to honor the summons by the court regarding the abduction of three men by suspected police officers.

The promise by the IG comes after he failed to honour three court summons by Justice Diana Kavedza alongside Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss Amin Mohammed by two different judges.

Speaking in Kwale during the opening of the annual Administration Police Service Senior Commanders’ Conference yesterday, Kanja said he would honour the summons as he had promised.

“There is no problem, when summoned to appear in court I will when the time comes. I will present myself and speak the words I am speaking,” Kanja stated.

He emphasised that the National Police Service (NPS) is investigating all cases of abductions involving Kenyan citizens and promised that those responsible will be brought to justice.

“Investigations are at the advanced level in all the cases reported of missing persons. I have given instructions that the investigations should be done keenly and be completed,” he said.

“All the criminals involved shall be arrested and arraigned in court as stipulated in the law. That’s where we are with the investigations and we shall inform you whom we shall have arrested,” he added.

Justus Mutumwa, Martin Mwau, and Karani Muema, now referred to as the ‘Mlolongo Three,’ were allegedly taken in Mlolongo, Machakos County, on December 16 and 17, 2024, alongside another man, Stephen Mbisi Kavingu. Their whereabouts remain unknown nearly five weeks later. Police have denied any involvement in the incident.

kanja noted that the NPS is working on digitizing its services including the rolling out of a digital occurrence book (OB) to enable Kenyans to report cases using their smartphones.

According to Kanja, the digitization of these services will help curb corruption and improve service delivery.
