MPs approve Budget Policy Statement

The national government budget ceiling has been proposed at Ksh 2,523,474,081,840 of which Ksh 2,447,236,081,480 will go to the the executive

Members of the National Assembly have approved the Report of the Liaison Committee on the Budget Policy Statement (BPS) for the financial year 2025/2026 and several departmental gommittee reports on the 2025 BPS.

In approving the report, which was tabled by the Liaison Committee, MPs set various budget ceilings, which will determination funds to be allocated to the national and county governments.

The national government budget ceiling has been set at Ksh 2,523,474,081,840 of which Ksh 2,447,236,081,480 will go to the the executive of Ksh 8,652,200,000 will be set aside for the office of the Auditor General.

A total of Ksh 49,488,200,000 has approved for allocation to Parliament and Ksh 26,749,800,000 to the Judiciary.

On the other hand, Ksh 405,069,420,197 has been set as the budget ceiling for county governments as equitable share of national revenue.

Other allocations are Ksh 7,852,814,725 to the Equalisation Fund and Ksh 2,747,185,275 as arrears to the Equalisation Fund.

The report also sought the approval of Ksh 69,802,409,623 for the County Governments Additional Allocations.

The Liaison committee, which is chaired by Deputy Speaker Gladys Boss has also sought approval of the allocation of Ksh 3 billion for public participation  initiatives in the 2025/26 financial year.

The BPS was referred to the committee due to delay in forming the Budget and Appropriations Committee, whose constitution was concluded today.

Approving the BPS and the various allocations was a critical stage in the process as it will now serve as the guiding document for the government to develop the detailed budget estimates for the 2025/26 fiscal year based on the outlined priorities and set policy goals.
