Maraga: I will nail corruption if I was president.
There has been speculation that the former CJ is eyeing political office in the 2027 General Election
Former Chief Justice David Maraga has cited corruption as the biggest problem facing the country and said, if he were to be president, he will ensure everyone respects the rule of law.
“If I was given the opportunity to govern this country, I would get everyone to obey the law. Everything would fall in place. The problem we have is corruption,” he told a forum at the ongoing People Dialogue Festival (PDF) at Uhuru Park, Nairobi.
There has been speculation that the former CJ is eyeing political office in the 2027 General Election, which some analysts saying he is ideal persons Kenyans need as president.
The speculation emanated from his recent activities on social media and public engagements including meeting with activists.
However, he is yet to take a position on whether he will consider running against President William Ruto, whose policies, including the Social Health Insurance Fund, he has been critical off.
But asked today what he would do right as president if given the opportunity, he turned philosophical: “I want to ask you: which type of leader would you want to have? The state of the country is bad. It is open for everybody to see that the resources are being plundered, right left and centre.”
“The leadership that is required is one that is accountable to the people. The leadership we need is one who understands that when you are in a position of leadership, you are just a trustee of the people.”
Maraga also criticised the push to oust the seven judges of the Supreme Court, including Chief Justice Martha Koome, saying the petitions filed against them are based on false allegations.
He accused the petitioners, including senior counsel Ahmednassir Abdullahi and Nelson Havi of “dishonesty for personal gain or to assist someone achieve a political end.”
