KURA set to commission Ngong Road-Naivasha Flyover ahead of schedule
KURA Director General Eng. Silas Kinoti said the project, initially scheduled for completion in July 2027, is progressing ahead of schedule and is almost ready to be opened to traffic.
The newly completed Ngong Road–Naivasha Road Junction Flyover is set to be commissioned in the coming weeks, marking a major milestone in the government’s efforts to improve urban mobility and ease chronic traffic congestion along one of Nairobi’s busiest transport corridors.
The 800-metre elevated dual carriageway, implemented by the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), has reached its final stages, with technical teams currently conducting structural confirmation tests ahead of its official opening to motorists.
KURA Director General Eng. Silas Kinoti said the project, initially scheduled for completion in July 2027, is progressing ahead of schedule and is almost ready to be opened to traffic.
“The Ngong Road Viaduct near the Junction Mall is almost ready for traffic. The technical teams are carrying out final structural confirmatory tests. The project, which was initially scheduled to be completed by July 2027, is now approaching the final stages before commissioning,” Kinoti said.
He noted that the flyover is designed to permanently eliminate severe traffic bottlenecks by separating through-traffic along Ngong Road from vehicles accessing Naivasha Road and King’ara Road.
Kinoti, who recently toured the project site to assess progress, said the main contractor had assured him that construction works remain on schedule and are likely to be completed ahead of the expected timeline.
“Once completed, the viaduct will significantly improve traffic flow along the busy Ngong Road corridor, enhance connectivity, and reduce travel time for thousands of motorists and commuters,” he said.
The project forms part of the government’s broader urban transformation agenda aimed at modernising Nairobi’s transport infrastructure and supporting economic growth.
Besides easing congestion, the flyover is expected to improve access to key facilities, including the nearby Talanta Stadium, which is among venues being prepared for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
While commenting on the progress, Interior Principal Secretary Dr Raymond Omollo described the project as a major step towards transforming Nairobi into a modern and efficient capital city.
He said the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration has been working closely with relevant agencies and stakeholders to facilitate smooth implementation of the project through traffic management, stakeholder coordination, public safety oversight and road safety awareness initiatives.
According to Omollo, these measures are intended to ensure that the infrastructure delivers its intended benefits while safeguarding motorists, pedestrians and communities living around the project area.
The commissioning of the Ngong Road–Naivasha Road Junction Flyover is expected to provide a significant boost to Nairobi’s transport network by improving connectivity between Ngong Road and the Central Business District, reducing travel times and enhancing the overall efficiency of movement within the city.
