KPC’s Omondi named Malkia Strikers head coach

The Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) has selected a team of four to take over the mantle of leading the Malkia Strikers up until the FIVB Women’s World Championship in Thailand come August this year.

The four-member coaching squad will be led by Kenya Pipeline Corporation (KPC) tactician George Omondi and will be assisted by the duo of David Muthui (FIVB Level 2) and Esther Chepkosgei (FIVB Level 2) with the Team Trainer being named as Azenga Mavisi. The 46-year-old has experience with national team matters having had a stint as Wafalme Stars (Men’s National Team) 10 years ago. He also an Assistant coach with the Kenya under 18 side during the African Nations Junior Volleyball Championship in Tunisia last year.

Omondi has a well versed resume as player and coach in various capacities. Between 1998 and 2010 as a player he featured for Stima Kisumu, Telecom Kisumu and later on for a decade KCB where he managed to pick a title.

His coaching career includes; German School Society Kenya for four years, Technical University of Kenya (TUK), Co-op Bank Men’s Team, Kenya Men’s Coach (2015), Trailblazers Men’s Team (2019-2024), Under 18 Boys national team coach and presently Kenya Pipeline Ladies Team.

The National Executive Committee (NEC) led by KVF President Charles Nyaberi conducted interviews in what was dubbed a first and came up with the names.

“The technical bench is comprised of seasoned coaches from some of the top clubs in the country. We believe they are capable of selecting and guiding the team to become world beaters,” stated Nyaberi during the announcement.

A statement on the KVF social media channels said; “The Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) is pleased to announce the appointment of the coaching staff for the upcoming season.

Following a thorough selection process, the federation has entrusted the following individuals with leading and shaping the future of our teams.

The Kenya Volleyball Federation congratulates the new coaching team and looks forward to a successful season ahead.”

Meanwhile the team is expected to hit camp to select a squad that will be carried to Vietnam for a series of build ups before the Championships proper begin on August 22nd in Thailand.

“We will establish the training camp once the Africa Club Championships conclude in Abuja, Nigeria, and arrange a friendly match in Vietnam a week before the championships to fine-tune the squad,” added Nyaberi who revealed that the contract of the new-look technical bench would be reviewed based on assessment of performance especially in the World Championships.

Omondi replaces Japheth Munala who took the team to the last Paris Olympics in 2024.
