Teachers who participated in the supervision, invigilation and marking of last year’s national examination will be paid by Friday this week.
Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i said the dues will be settled before the Kenya National Examination Council (Knec) embarks on a new examination cycle.
He thanked teachers for being patient as the government embarked on verification of the details of over 20,000 contracted professionals.
“I met the chairman of the examination body George Magoha earlier today and we agreed to settle the payments to give us room to concentrate on the 2017 primary and secondary schools exams,” he said.
Speaking during the thanksgiving ceremony of Utawala Academy today, the CS assured teachers who have not received their payments that everything will be settled on time.
The declaration came as both the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) and the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) piled pressure on the Knec to release the payment without further delay.
Meanwhile, Matiang’i cautioned that the ministry will take stern action against teachers who will be found to abet bullying in boarding schools.
He said the ministry is investigating cases of reported incidences and will not hesitate to ensure that necessary action is taken against any teacher or student who will be found to be engaging in the vice.
“I believe that bullying is an outdated, primitive and colonial act which should not be tolerated at this time and age,” he said.
An official from the Education Ministry who sought anonymity confirmed to People Daily that a top national school from Kiambu County is among those being probed.
Last month, a Form One student from Maseno School was reportedly sodomized and critically injured by fellow students in a bullying incident.
The news of the alleged incident was first brought to the public attention by a distraught relative of the victim through her social media account.
