Kenyan footballer in custody over alleged drug trafficking in Mombasa
A Kenyan footballer plying his trade in the National Super League (NSL) is among four suspects arrested by police at the Likoni Ferry in Mombasa ferrying an illegal substance suspected to be heroin.
According to DCI the four were arrested in a private car by detectives from the Transnational and organised crimes unit (TOCU) after a tip-off via the Fichua Kwa DCI anonymous toll-free number.
The four, Ali Mwakeo, Swaleh Mgoshi, Zacharia Mwakisuwa and Juma Mgosi, are currently in custody pending arraignment in court.
DCI further said a sample of the suspected substance has been “flown to National Forensic Lab at the Chemistry and Toxicology Unit” based at the DCI Headquarters for further examination.
Zacharia Mwakisuwa is currently in the books of second tier side SS Assad and was arrested after being found in possession of the substance, which was carefully concealed in a shopping bag and hidden beneath the car’s bonnet.
Preliminary findings showed the 1.5 kilos of heroin has a street value of Sh3 million.
Their destination and origin are yet to be known.
In an interview with a local daily SS Assad chairman Shukrani Kuzi confirmed that indeed Mwakisuwa is a registered player at the club, but has been absconding duty in recent weeks.
“It’s unfortunate to receive such news, I hope he is alright and this is just a misunderstanding,” Kuzi said.
“I have seen various posts about him today on social media.
It hurts so much because he is a very talented player.” The four are expected to be arraigned in court soon after the Easter holiday.
