Kenya to fully implement WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement
Ombam says since ratification of the pact, Kenya has witnessed an increase in trade volumes and reduction of unnecessary delays
Kenya remains committed in the full implementation of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA).
Trade Principal Secretary Regina Ombam said the agreement represents a major milestone in global efforts to simplifying, modernising and harmonising trade processes.
Speaking she officially opened the National Trade Facilitation Committee (NTFC) Workshop of the TFA in Mombasa, Ombam who was also the chair, noted that for Kenya the agreement serves as a tool to improve the trade environment, boost competitiveness and facilitate growth of the economy through increased efficiency in cross border trade.
She added that since ratification of the agreement, Kenya has witnessed an increase in trade volumes and reduction of unnecessary delays and reiterated the government’s commitment to creating a business environment that fosters growth, innovation and competitiveness.
“Since the ratification in 2015, Kenya has made commendable progress in the implementation of key provisions like the Single Window System and the Pre-Arrival Processing which has streamlined customs processes,” said the PS.
Trademark Africa Country Director Lilian Mwai speaking at the same forum disclosed that the organisation was supporting several initiatives aimed at promoting international trade.
Mwai noted that efforts including trade and investment portfolio initiative, strengthening market access, integrated customs access among others align with Kenya’s obligations under the WTO-TFA to make trade faster, cheaper and predictable.
Also Present was the Ann Nalo representative of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) at the British High Commission, Nairobi who’s disclosed that FCDO had funded initiatives in Kenya to build trade capacity, streamline customs processes and reduce tariff barriers.
The workshop brings together representatives from MDAs, private sector and development partners and is a platform review the implementation of the agreement, identify gaps and reprioritize actions.
