Kenya joins Sahara and Sahel Observatory Board as 3rd Vice President

Kenya has officially joined the Sahara and Sahel Observatory (OSS) Board as the 3rd Vice President, marking a significant step in our commitment to regional environmental diplomacy, Climate action and the Green Agenda.
This new leadership role strengthens Kenya’s voice in shaping sustainable land and water management strategies across the Sahel-Saharan region.
Environment, Climate Change and Forestry Principal Secretary Festus Ng’eno while confirming the election, commended the country for its important role in global conversation around environmental sustainability.
“We look forward to working with member states to advance collective climate action and ecosystem restoration in Africa,” he said.
Kenya was elected during the 5th Steering Committee, meeting which was held in Tunisia.
The chairman’s role was taken by Egypt, with France, Libya, Benin, Mauritania as first, second, and fourth vice chairs respectively.
Ng’eno, who represented Kenya in the 7th General Assembly under the auspices of OSS, said the new leadership role strengthens Kenya’s voice in shaping sustainable land and water management strategies across the Sahel-Saharan region.
The Kenyan government showcased key achievements made in building community resilience, strengthening early warning systems, and aligning national policies to address drought risks, particularly in Kitui and Samburu counties.
Ng’eno emphasised that the Participatory Risk Management Report will serve as a key guiding tool for the final phase of project implementation Kenya. The country reaffirmed its commitment towards advancing regional climate resilience.
The meeting was organised by OSS – a regional body championing sustainable natural resource management and the fight against desertification, climate change, and drought across the Sahara and Sahel regions.
The session brought together key representatives from Kenya, Djibouti, Sudan, and Uganda to review the progress of ongoing projects and strengthen regional collaboration for a more climate-resilient Eastern Africa.
Ng’eno was accompanied to the meeting by Director Climate Change Dr Pacifica Ogola among other key ministry officials and other environment agency support teams.
