KenGen appoint Abraham Serem as acting MD, CEO

Abraham Serem has been named the acting Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the country’s Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen), following the ratification from the company’s management.

Serem succeeds Rebecca Miano, who has been appointed the Cabinet Secretary (CS) for East African Community (EAC), Arid and Semi-Arid Lands, and Regional Development.

Serem joined KenGen in March 2016 and has been serving as the company’s General Manager of administration and Human Resource (HR) ever since.

Additionally, he has held the positions of HR Director at Heineken East Africa, HR Business Partner at East African Breweries Limited, and HR Manager, Central Africa at Reckitt Benckiser.

Serem will be responsible for managing the transition process of the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) listed company.

In a statement following the news, General (Rtd) Samson Mwathethe, Chairman of the KenGen Board, praised departing MD and CEO Rebecca Miano for her outstanding work during her time with the organisation.

“Miano guided KenGen through an exciting period of steady growth that persisted throughout her leadership, firmly placing KenGen on an upward trajectory,” he said.

“Her greatest challenge may have been the Covid-19 pandemic, which threatened electricity utilities all across the world. Despite this, she was able to maintain control and produce positive results even when Covid-19 limitations were at their most severe,” he added.

The chairman also praised Miano for enabling KenGen’s diversification plan and implementing a number of multimillion drilling consultancy projects in the region, particularly in Ethiopia and Djibouti where KenGen has active geothermal drilling operations.

“We will remember Miano for her involvement in advocating KenGen’s position in the climate action fight, not only locally but also going above and above to put the company on the map,” he noted.

Mwathethe observed that the company has put in place a strong succession plan that will enable it to have a seamless shift in leadership over the years, so the bar that the trend-setting CEO has established will remain through the transition phase and beyond.
