Kasarani Stadium to host 2024 CHAN finals, CAF announces
It said the decisions were made following consultations between CAF and the three nations that will be hosting the 8th edition of CHAN
Kenya’s Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, will host the 2024 finals for the CAF African Nations Championships (CHAN) on August 30, while Tanzania will host the opening match for the competition, which is being hosted by three East African countries (Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania)
In a statement released by the African football governing body, CAF, yesterday, the 55,000-seater stadium will host the finals, while Tanzania’s Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam will host the opening match of the tournament on 2nd August, as Uganda’s Mandela Stadium in Kampala will stage the bronze medal match.
The second-tier competition, which has 19 teams, will run between August 2 and 30.
Kenya will host the Group A matches while mainland Tanzania will host Group B matches. Uganda will hosts Group C matches whilst Group D matches shall be held in Zanzibar, Tanzania.
Group A comprises Kenya, Morocco, Angola, DR Congo, and Zambia, Group B consists of Tanzania, Madagascar, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, and the Central African Republic while Group C teams consists of Uganda, Niger, Guinea, South Africa and Algeria.
Zanzibar’s Amaan Stadium will host group D teams that include hosts Zanzibar, Senegal, Congo, which has been reinstated to replace Equatorial Guinea, initially suspended by FIFA, Sudan, and Nigeria. According to CAF, Zanzibar was chosen as one of the host locations, a move that demonstrates CAF’s dedication to promoting African football’s inclusion and reach.
The host cities for the group stages of the tournament are as follows:
- Group A | Nairobi, Kenya: Kenya, Morocco, Angola, DR Congo, Zambia
- Group B | Dar es Salaam, Tanzania: Tanzania, Madagascar, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic
- Group C | Kampala, Uganda: Uganda, Niger, Guinea, South Africa, Algeria
- Group D | Zanzibar: Senegal, *Congo, Sudan, Nigeria
*Following the decision of the of the CAF Appeals Board, Equatorial Guinea was replaced by Congo.
The football body said the decisions were made following consultations between CAF and the three nations that will be hosting the 8th edition of CHAN, which has been delayed due to postponements due to last of readiness by Kenya.
This is the first time three East African countries will be co-hosting the tournament, as they are also set to do the same for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the continent’s largest competition.
In 2016, Rwanda hosted the competition, while in 2018, Kenya was stripped of the hosting rights and given to Morocco due to inadequate preparations.
