Huddah Monroe: ‘I’d rather grow old single than marry a Kenyan man’

Kenyan socialite and entrepreneur Huddah Monroe has once again sparked conversation online after opening up about her views on marriage, dating and the experiences that have shaped her attitude towards relationships.

The outspoken businesswoman said she would rather grow old single than marry a Kenyan man, citing what she described as repeated encounters with disrespectful behaviour, poor manners and inappropriate approaches from some men.

Monroe, who has built a high-profile public persona around beauty, fashion, entrepreneurship and social media, said she is accustomed to men approaching women with greater courtesy, including seeking permission before initiating conversations.

However, she claimed that even seemingly respectful encounters with some Kenyan men can quickly take an uncomfortable turn.

“Even if you’re nice and engage in a conversation with them, they will still end up disrespecting you. They will say something that is just disgusting,” Monroe said.

She also had a blunt message for men who recognise her in public.

“So please, msinisalime. Mkiniona mahali, wache ikae,” she said, effectively asking admirers not to greet her and instead leave her alone.

Her remarks have reignited the familiar social media debate about dating culture, respect and how men and women interact in public spaces.

Monroe also broadened the conversation beyond Kenya, describing her experiences dating Black men as “too much hard work” and likening the experience to navigating a maze.

She suggested that some of the behaviour she encounters could be linked to how African boys are raised, directing part of her criticism at parents and particularly mothers raising sons.

Her comments come from a woman who has spent more than a decade in the public eye. Monroe rose to prominence as a Kenyan socialite before reinventing herself as an entrepreneur and beauty and fashion personality, building a substantial following through her outspoken views on relationships, lifestyle and personal independence.

Known for her unapologetic approach to discussing money, relationships and modern womanhood, she has frequently divided opinion online, attracting both criticism and support for her candid commentary.

Her latest remarks are unlikely to be any different, with her declaration that she would choose singlehood over marriage to a Kenyan man once again putting her personal views on relationships firmly in the spotlight.
