Homicide detectives take over probe into the death of Kariobangi North MCA Joel Munuve
Family lawyer Danstan Omari said autopsy was postponed to allow them to conduct forensic reconstruction and recollect the evidence that they need
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have taken over the investigations into the cause of death of Kariobangi North MCA Joel Munuve, who collapsed and died outside a Kiambu Road-based hospital on Tuesday this week.
Speaking to the press outside the Lee Funeral Home where the body of the late MCA is being preserved, lawyer Danstan Omari revealed the family together with the political class, the government pathologist and the Homicide Unit of the DCI Nairobi area held a meeting and agreed that the autopsy to be conducted tomorrow at 9 am.
“After a meeting between the family, the Homicide Unit of the DCI, and the late MCA’s political family, we agreed to have the autopsy postponed from today and be done tomorrow. Munuve was a public figure, and he was owned by many people. It is a public interest matter, and that’s why we agreed to follow the due process,” Omari stated.
The lawyer clarified that the family did not stop the autopsy from taking place today, saying the homicide detectives will conduct forensic reconstruction and recollect the evidence that they need for investigations.
Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai, who was a friend of the late Munuve, said the Nairobi County Assembly will be interested in the results from the autopsy because they do not want disharmony in the society.
The Assembly will be interested in the outcome of the autopsy, and we have agreed that it will be done transparently to ensure there is no doubt. We do not want death to cause disharmony in society,” he said.
The family has requested the public and political class to avoid ongoing speculations on the cause of death until it is confirmed by the pathologists after the scheduled autopsy.
“We need complete silence on the cause of death speculations until the pathologist gives the scientific cause of his death. Let us not point fingers at anyone that there was any foul. For now, what we have confirmed is that the Honorable Member passed away, and he is now at Lee Funeral Home. The postmortem shall be public, and we will all be informed,” Omari pleaded on behalf of the family.
Munuve was pronounced dead on arrival on Tuesday at the AAR Hospital along Kiambu Road at 10:30 am.
While confirming his death, the City Assembly Speaker Kennedy Ngondi stated that they were not aware of Munuve having any medical complications, as his sudden death has shocked them.
