Orwoba says she is awaiting my charges which were being booked at Parliament police station
Former Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba says she is being held at Central Police Station after she was whisked from Parliament after attempts to enter the Senate were thwarted by police officers.
“I have been detained in Central Police Station. I am awaiting my charges which are apparently being booked at parliament police station. The central police bosses says that they cannot charge me because the individual who triggered the arrest are not here and they are the ones to charge me,” she posted on her Facebook page.
“I want to assure those doubting my intentions and my reasons for fighting. This is not about a salary or a position, trust me. By the time this fight comes to an end, the outright corruption and impunity will lay bare for EVERYONE to see. From the Senate Speakers office to the Clerk of the Senate all the way down to their errand boys and girls,” she added
Videos circulating on social media earlier showed Orwoba being carried away by female officers as she demanded that she be allowed to resume during after the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal quashed her expulsion by the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
“You have gotten orders from above? I’m not leaving here…I’ll stay here till evening; I’ve come to work. Any officer who wants to come and arrest me, please arrest me,” she is heard telling the officers.
Last week, the tribunal, which is chaired by Desma Nungo, ruled that the party’s disciplinary process was marred by procedural lapses that breached fairness and natural justice.
“There was no fair opportunity for hearing, and the complainant was not furnished with the impugned decision,” the tribunal ruled.
It further noted that key documents, including the complaint letter, were unsigned and undated, while there was no evidence that the expulsion decision was served to her.
The PPDT found that the irregularities stripped UDA’s disciplinary process of legality.
The former nominated senator, who was expelled over alleged disloyalty claims for turning up at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to welcome former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i on his return from the United Stated but which she dismissed as politically motivated, maintains she remains the sitting nominated senator until the courts decide otherwise.
UDA, however, insists the expulsion was valid and argued before the tribunal that the matter was sub judice due to a pending High Court petition filed by Orwoba.
The tribunal dismissed this claim, saying no parallel proceedings were active.
Last week, Consolata Wakwabubi was sworn in, sealing the vacancy that had been left by Orwoba.
