Family Planning Strategic Plan launched in Migori as 15000 teenagers get pregnant annually

Migori county targets 52 per cent uptake of family planning from its current 44 per cent by 2022 as they launch the county Family Planning Strategic Plan that runs from 2016-2022.

The plan that will bring together partners who are championing for family planning including Jhpiego, Afya plus,NCPD among others will act as a road map on how to  implement family planning program in the county.

Speaking during the launch of the strategic plan, Migori county director of health Dr. Gregory Ganda said family planning should be a responsibility to everyone in Migori County.

Dr. Ganda said, according to Migori reproductive health statistics 15, 000 teenagers in the county get pregnant annually, a number that can only be reduced through proper implementation of family planning strategic  plan.

The latest data by Kenya Demographic Health Survey(KDHS) indicates that 24 per cent of girls aged between 15-19 have begun bearing children, in Migori county, a figure which is higher compared to the national figure of 18%.

In addition to  that, the contraceptive use among the adolescent in Migori County is at 17 percent in Migori  according to KDHS report of  2014.

The director of health said implementation of the strategic plan will be a greater tool in controlling high birth rate in Migori County which has resulted to a total population of 1,166,363.

On his side , the County  secretary  said that  population control will  not  only  reduce poverty level in the county by raising managing family size but  also  ensure  effective service  delivery.
