Eight state firms shamed for refusing to pay their interns
Eight State firms have been shamed for refusing to pay their interns despite benefiting from their services.
A Public Service Commission evaluation report has shown that public universities are among the top beneficiaries of interns who are not rewarded for their effort.
The varsities include, Egerton University, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture & Technology, Kirinyaga University, Machakos University and the Universities Fund.
Other institutions included, Coast Water Works, Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development and the Lake Victoria North Water Works Development Agency.
In 2021 at least 10,242 interns were involved in different programmes under the public service internship programme.
The conversation of exploitation of Interns has been a debate globally, with international firms raising concern over the exploitation of young adults hoping to join the job market.
In the last financial year, the PSC saw a decrease in youth joining internship programme due to a cash crunch which halted ministries from hiring.
