Eight injured, four cars burnt after LPG trailer explodes at Mai Mahiu, no fatalities reported
Eight people were seriously injured and four cars burnt to ashes after a trailer transporting Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) exploded at Mutarakwa near Ngenia High School along the Mai Mahiu – Nairobi road.
Those injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment.
However, no fatalities were reported.
“An LPG tanker that explode along Limuru Mutarakwa raod near Ngenia High School has been contained. The accident involved 8 other vehicles which have been completely burnt. No fatalities reported and St John Ambulance volunteers have rushed all casualties to nearby hospitals.” An update by St Johns Ambulance read in part.
Orange flames and black smoke billowed from the burning vehicles as a crowd scampered for safety.
Witnesses stood at a distance as the trailer smoldered, reducing everything in its vicinity to soot and ashes.
Limuru sub county police commander Eilen Mola said the tanker was transporting gas to Kisumu, when it developed mechanical problem.
It was at this point that it exploded near Ngenia high school along the Nairobi Mai Mahiu road burning four other vehicles.
Mola said a team of detectives have been sent to the scene to establish the status of the victims.
“As of now, we do not know the number nor the status of the victims. We have sent a team of police officers from Tigoni police station investigate”she said.
According to witness reports, the trailer got into an accident at around 6am, but during the efforts to remove it from the Mutarakwa section of the road on Sunday afternoon, it exploded into a huge ball of fire and smoke.
