Mount Kenya University among institutions tapped to offer re-fresher training for public school teachers

Mount Kenya University is among institutions tapped to offer re-fresher training for public school teachers that will inform their promotion and professional growth.

This is after Teachers Service Commission came up with a new policy, that requires each of the 340,000 teachers to undertake mandatory in-service professional training lasting for five years upon which they will get their certificates renewed.

Speaking during the launch of the training programme, TSC Chief Executive Nancy Macharia said the TPD is a life-long learning programme organised in six tiered competency levels where each level takes five years to complete.

“We need to see our teachers conduct research projects and write academic and acclaimed research papers to improve the teaching quality in schools,” Macharia said.

“At the end of each module, successful teachers will have their teaching certificates renewed after every five years.”

According to TSC, each tutor will have to pay Sh6,000 every year for the refresher courses dubbed Teacher Professional Development (TPD).

The courses shall be modular-based training programmes for all practising teachers and will adopt online and in-person approach.

However, Macharia says those who will not have taken the refresher courses will not be granted teaching licence and may not be authorised to teach.

The refresher courses are expected to boost the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) roll out.

Other institutions responsible for the training includes, Kenyatta University, Riara University and Kenya Education Management Institute.
