CS Murkomen declares Monday a public holiday to mark Idd-ul-Fitr
The holiday is celebrated by Muslims worldwide because it marks the end of the month-long dawn-to-sunset fasting of Ramadan
The ministry of Interior has declared next week Monday a holiday to celebrate Idd-ul-Fitr.
The announcement was made today via a Kenya gazette notice by the Interior Cabinet Secretary, Kipchumba Murkomen.
“It is notified for the general information of the public that, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 2 (1) of the Public Holidays Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration declares that Monday, the 31st March, 2025, shall be a public holiday to mark Idd-ul-Fitr,” Murkomen stated in the gazette notice.
Government institutions, including schools and banks, among others, will remain closed.
Idd-ul-Fitr is the first of the two Muslim official holidays in their calendar.
The holiday is celebrated by Muslims worldwide because it marks the end of the month-long dawn-to-sunset fasting of Ramadan.
This year’s Ramadhan began on the 28th of last month and continues until tomorrow evening.
During the fasting period, Muslims around the world fast, pray, and reflect on their religious obligations to themselves and their communities.
Idd-ul-Fitr comes after President William Ruto earlier this week hosted an Iftar at State House.
“I urged Muslim clerics, and all religious leaders, to shepherd God’s flock with humility. We will keep supporting religious institutions, including mosques and churches, as part of celebrating the freedom of worship in our country,” President Ruto stated during the Iftar.
Present during the Iftar were Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and then-Environment CS (now health CS) Aden Duale, among other leaders.
