Gor Mahia FC will want to forget their recent pitch woes as they host Sofapaka FC in the rescheduled midweek fixture in the Kenya Premier League tomorrow afternoon with two other tasty ties also lined up.
The match to be played at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos County is expected to draw fireworks with K’Ogalo coach Zedekiah Otieno facing scrutiny following their weekend 2-1 loss to rivals Tusker FC. Adding to their misery is the fact that the defending league champions are a whopping nine points behind league leaders Tusker.
It will be a chance for the 21 times league champions to cut the gap with a win as they currently have 24 points.
In the last seven games between themselves, Gor Mahia has triumphed thrice over Sofapaka including their first leg 1-0 win over Batoto ba Mungu in mid-June last year.
Sofapaka, who recently parted ways with experienced tactician Robert Matano, will be seeking revenge on their part. The sixth placed is tied on points with Gor Mahia but have a lesser goal aggregate and a match more. They will have confidence seeing as they have two wins in a row.
Meanwhile, in another duel, ambitious Kenya Police FC host Bandari FC at Police Sacco Stadium in Nairobi’s South C. The law enforcers under Burundian coach Etienne Ndayigarije are currently second on the log with 30 points and a match in hand. Police are presently in second place with three point’s difference as they seek to clinch the prestigious title. Police are in fine form with 13 points collected out of a possible 15.
On the other hand Bandari under Coach Ken Odhiambo will be no pushovers in the match. To their advantage forecast for the day is 29 degrees celsius. The dockers are however down to seventh place with now in in their past five matches. The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) sponsored side is on 23 points off 16 matches and will have to be at their best to leave Nairobi with full-points.
Elsewhere, at the SportPesa Arena in Muranga County, AFC Leopards SC clash with KCB FC in a good battle. The bankers who find themselves sitting third on the table after their recent 1-1 draw against City Stars will be keen to bounce back to winning ways when they lock horns with eighth placed Ingwe.
Head Coach Patrick Odhiambo has warned his players not to rest on their laurels during the highly anticipated fixture. He has urged the boys to be clinical in front of goal to secure the three vital points.
“AFC Leopards is a top side. We all know their capability and we do not doubt it, so we have to be on top of our game tomorrow to register the maximum points. Of course we have to keep winning games to ensure that we remain top and probably clinch the title at the end of the season,” noted Odhiambo.
