36-year-old house help found hanging on a staircase grill in Kilimani apartment, Nairobi

Police probe and postmortem examination will confirm if it is a case of suicide or not.

Homicide detectives in Nairobi are investigating the circumstances under which a 36-year-old house help died after her lifeless body was found dead at an apartment in Kilimani, Nairobi.

The woman, identified as Grace Akinyi Mangana, was found hanging from a staircase grill at about 6:30am on Wednesday, August 19, 2026.

Police said the incident was reported by the apartment caretaker after he woke up to find tenants gathered at the staircase.

Upon checking, the caretaker found Mangana’s body lying on the staircase after tenants had removed her from the grill in an apparent attempt to save her.

Police probe and postmortem examination will confirm if it is a case of suicide or not.

Mangana was employed as a house help by one of the tenants and lived on the third floor of the apartment.

Preliminary investigations indicate she may have woken up while her employer was asleep before allegedly using a black cloth to hang herself.

Her body was moved to City Mortuary pending a post-mortem examination as detectives continue investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.
