Chris Obure: Controversial businessman causing ripples in the City

The story of Chris Obure; a controversial city businessman, is one of mystery, aura and never shy away from controversy, in this case, all for the wrong reasons.

He seems to court trouble so easily yet also lives life to the fullest marked by gun dramas and alleged claims of fraud.

In the past three years, he has been in the limelight over a myriad of accusations including; gun possession, money laundering, murder and assault.

In 2022, Obure and his bodyguard (Robert Bodo) were arraigned in court over the killing of businessman Kelvin Omwenga but were later granted bail. High Court Judge Jessie Lesiit had ordered the duo to surrender their travel documents.

Ballistic results from the DCI showed that the Ceska pistol registered to Chris Obure was used at the scene of crime, with fingerprints positively traced to Bodo.

Eight years ago, Obure is said to have caused commotion at Nairobi’s K1 Club in Parklands after an altercation with a patron.

Police reports state that he assaulted a reveler after fighting over a woman and even fired live shots in the air that led to a stampede. Police were later called and the culprit arrested and charged.

Obure who is said to operate mainly in the posh Kilimani area of Nairobi, is a feared man quite literally and his associates are also said to be connected and monied.

He has been implicated in fake gold scams and also accused of money laundering.

Mid last year, he reportedly conned an American citizen of Shs 54million pretending that he could sell him precious stones.

In 2023, the Anti-Corruption Court froze the accounts of two private international air charter companies linked to the self styled businessman.

There were widespread allegations that they had been used as fronts for laundering money valued at Sh18.9million.

In that matter, Chief Magistrate Eunice Nyutu had allowed the two airlines to challenge the freezing orders obtained by the Assets Recovery Agency on September 1, 2024.

The middle aged businessman is amongst a young crop of individuals who are rolling high.

With Nairobi being spotlighted as a hub of high end crime by global security authorities including Interpol, the crop of dirty money is attracting interest and also scowl.
