Mutahi Ngunyi suspect foul play after Uhuru withdraw from AU peace talks
Political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi has expressed his thoughts on the decision by former President Uhuru Kenyatta to pull out from the African Union peace talks on Ethiopia scheduled for today in South Africa.
He stated that Kenyatta’s failure to attend the peace talk didn’t add up.
“Things don’t add up about President Uhuru Kenyatta failing to attend the Ethiopia-Tigre mediation in South Africa,” he stated.
“One, Ruto, visits Ethiopia this week and meets Prime Minister, Two, when he returns, the US special envoy to the Horn meets him at State House as the new mediator. Add the math,” he added.
In a letter to the Chairman of the African Union, Mousa Faki Mahamat, the former President cited a clash in his schedule as the reason for not being in a position to attend.
“I wish to notify your good office that I will not be able to attend the AU-Convened Peace Talks scheduled for October 8, 2022, in South Africa owing to conflicts in my schedule,” he wrote.
Following his appointment by President William Ruto as peace envoy, he was expected to lead the talks alongside former Nigerian President Olesegun Obasanjo and former South African deputy president Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka.
The AU convened talks “aimed at laying the foundation for a structured and sustained mediation” between the two sides toward a “durable resolution of the conflict.”
