The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has sanctioned Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) President Samuel Eto’o with a four-match stadium ban following his conduct during Cameroon’s 2-0 defeat to hosts Morocco at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations last Friday.
In a statement released by CAF, its Disciplinary Board confirmed that Eto’o had been charged and found guilty of breaching established conduct rules.
“CAF Disciplinary Board found Eto’o guilty of violating the principles of sportsmanship set out in Article 2(3) of the CAF Statutes and Article 82 of the CAF Disciplinary Code for his misconduct during the said match,” stated CAF.
“The CAF Disciplinary Board imposed a stadium ban on Eto’o for the next four (4) official CAF matches played in the context of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco 2025. The CAF DC also imposed a fine of $20,000 (Sh2.5 million).”
According to FECAFOOT, CAF’s Sh2.5million fine alongside the ban, “lacks any explicit justification”.
The sanction stems from an incident in which Eto’o was reportedly seen gesturing angrily at match officials over refereeing decisions, in full view of CAF President Patrice Motsepe.
The match itself was also marred by tensions on the pitch, with players from both teams involved in confrontations. CAF later confirmed it had launched investigations into the clashes that occurred during several AFCON fixtures.
While CAF upheld the punishment, FECAFOOT has strongly contested the ruling, describing it as unjustified and procedurally flawed. The Federation confirmed it would challenge the decision.
“The expedited procedure leading to this decision raises serious concerns regarding the fundamental requirements of a fair process,” FECAFOOT said on Thursday, adding it would appeal. “FECAFOOT reaffirms its support for its president and its commitment to respecting the principles governing credible disciplinary justice.”
With Cameroon now eliminated from the tournament, attention has shifted to the final stages of AFCON 2025. Hosts Morocco have advanced to the final, where they will face Senegal on Sunday, while Egypt and Nigeria will battle for third place in the playoff.
