Boinnet in China to purchase police equipment

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet and a team of senior police officers are in China to shop for more police gear.

The gear, according to insiders include more anti-riot equipment.

Boinnet and his delegation left for China on Saturday for a week long trip.

This comes amid reports police received three trailers of teargas canisters last week after being imported from China. They were escorted from Mombasa to the police stores in Nairobi.

Police are beefing up their equipment ahead of the general election in August.

Most of the weapons which include guns are bought from China. More hardware expected include guns, bullet proof vests, night vision goggles which are effective in operations and search and rescue missions at night and other equipment aimed at modernizing the police.

Some 25 Mine Resistant Personnel Carriers and 30 Armoured Personnel Carriers, which will be deployed to border regions that are affected by terror attacks were also acquired from China.

The APCs have been deployed to three main hotspots and are working well.

Some 150 personnel have been trained on how to handle the APCs in their areas of operation after the procurement from China

Of the personnel to handle the APCs, 30 were trained in China and 117 in Kenya.

The APCs are on a one-year warrant from the Chinese manufacturers and a number of technical team of mechanics are in Kenya supervising the maintanence, usage and general performance.

The carriers have since been deployed to Mandera, Lamu and West Pokot Counties where they have helped personnel for their safety.
