Baringo county government has embarked on a scheme of issuing cash vouchers to drought stricken families instead of distributing relief food to them.
Baringo governor Benjamin Cheboi who made the directive today in Kabarnet town while launching a 1.5 kilometer tarmac road said he opted to introduce the use of the vouchers following a rising theft of relief food.
Cheboi said the county government, which is rolling out the programme in collaboration with Kenya Red Cross, has already issued 1000 people with the vouchers each valued at 3, 000 shillings.
The Baringo governor said with the cash vouchers his administration targets to cover all the hunger stricken residents of the county who receive relief food from government and other well-wishers but the foodstuffs end up in the hands of looters.
He also said the county government has bought eight new water boozers to supply clean water to residents living in Baringo North, East Pokot and Baringo South Sub-Counties which are hard hit by the current drought.
On the just concluded voter registration, governor Cheboi said the low turnout in just concluded mass voter registration in Baringo was regrettable but urged the few new voters who turned up for the registration to ensure to participate in the August 2017 polls.
Cheboi who drummed support for the re-election of President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto expressed the need of all eligible voters to participate in the election saying those who do not engage in polling exercise were a serious let down to the country.
