Atheists in Kenya seek to defend their rights to be registered as legal entity
The Atheists in Kenya Society have challenged to fight the petition filed by the former Juja Member of Parliament Dr. Stephen Ndichu seeking to have the society suspended on the grounds that the registration and continued existence was unconstitutional.
Speaking at press briefing where they emphasised on the need of separation of religion and state in the government, the Vice President of the society Moureen Temba accused the former legislator of being sponsored by some religious groups.
“The Atheist in Kenya Society was registered under the society’s act on February 17 ,2016. our registration was vehemently opposed by some churches at the in particular the Kenya national congress of Pentecostal churches and ministries,” said Temba
Further, the society has noted their concern that the current government seems to privilege Christianity against all other religious organisation including atheists, calling on the government to invite the society to all government functions where religious organizations are represented
“When the government privileges one religion organizations against others, it undermines religious freedom. No state organ, or parastatal should be used to advance any religious ideology. there should be no forced prayers or religious practice in any public institution or government institution,” she added.
Echoing the statement, the president of the society Harrison Mumia called upon President William Ruto to review CBC to abolish the teaching of religion in the education curriculum, also asking to include members if the society into the CBC taskforce.
“Let us have one subject that will teach the history of religion including African Traditional religion,” said Mumia.
They thanked the President for appointing the six judges nominated by the judicial service commission and the return of lawyers Miguna Miguna in the country saying that it is refreshing to know the current government is keen on upholding the letter and spirit of the constitution.
