Wheat farmers will get lower prices for the 2025/2026 season with Grade 1 wheat (bushel weight of 78 and above) set to go for a minimum price of Sh4,750 per 90kg bag down from Sh5,300 in the previous season
Grade 2 wheat (bushel weight 75-77.9) has been set at Sh4,650 per 90kg bag down from Sh5,200. Grade 3 wheat, with a bushel weight below 75, is on a willing buyer-willing seller basis.
In a statement, the Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) said the prices were set after a study of the average cost of production, an established pricing formula and negotiations with the goal of ensuring fair compensation for farmers and encourage increased production.
The minimum prices will be applicable in the traditional market centres of Narok, Nakuru, Eldoret, Nyahururu and Timau.
They were reached at during a negotiation meeting held on July 3 following a four-day stakeholder consultation workshop held from June 24 to 27 to review the Wheat Purchase Programme as part of evaluation and monitoring efforts.
AFA also said it evaluated applications from millers seeking to import wheat, in collaboration with the National Treasury, under the Duty Remission Scheme (DRS) and were granted based on their registration with the Authority as wheat importers, performance in previous local wheat purchase commitments, performance in previous import quota utilisation and installed milling capacity.
However, it added that all participating millers will be required to purchase locally produced wheat in quantities proportional to their allocated import quotas.
AFA also said that aggregation will be done by aggregators who will be vetted afresh and registered as marketing agents. A handling fee of Sh220 per 90 kg bag will be paid to the aggregators cater for weighing, offloading and testing shared equally between the farmer and the miller.
