Oburu marks 83rd birthday in hospital as he remembers late brother Raila
ODM leader Oburu Oginga marked his 83rd birthday on October 15, 2026 while recovering at The Nairobi Hospital, with the occasion taking on a bittersweet significance as it coincided with the date his younger brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, died.
Oburu shared photographs of himself in a hospital gown cutting a birthday cake alongside family members, reflecting on the emotional weight of celebrating his life while mourning Raila, affectionately known as Baba.
He described their shared birthday and Raila’s death on the same date as a reminder of the enduring bond between the two brothers, transcending physical separation.
The veteran politician expressed gratitude to his family, Nairobi Hospital staff, ODM members and his personal staff for organising a surprise celebration and supporting him during his recovery.
He particularly thanked his spouses, Ann Oburu and Judith Oburu, alongside ODM trustee Elder Joshua Kawino, for their care and presence during the occasion.
Oburu also recognised his domestic staff and the team at Pawaa Centre for their dedication, loyalty and thoughtfulness in arranging the celebration.
“Your love and presence have made this solemn yet special day truly comforting. May God bless you all abundantly,” he said.
The birthday was marked by messages of support from family members and the ODM fraternity as Oburu continues his recovery while coming to terms with the loss of his younger brother.
