A police officer perished while fifteen others were seriously injured after the driver of the Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) they were travelling in lost control along Elwak-Kutulo road in Mandera County on Monday late afternoon.
Preliminary police findings show the accident could have been occasioned by heavy downpour and poor visibility.
“The incident occurred late Monday afternoon. Unfortunately, we lost one officer but the rest are out of danger.” A senior officer said.
Elwak-Kutulo is a high risk route owing to numerous Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) attacks staged by the Al Shabaab militants although police patrol has been significantly enhanced.
Police, passenger and private vehicles drive in high speed over fears of ambush attacks by militants.
However, under the command of Northern Kenya Regional Commissioner Ambassador Mohamud Saleh, ground and aerial police patrols have pushed away the insurgents.
The injured officers were rushed to Mandera Hospital.
In July last year, at least six people were killed when suspected al Shabaab militants sprayed two buses with bullets between Wargadud and Elwak in Mandera.
Meanwhile, detectives in Limuru are hunting down for five armed gunmen who raped a 14 years old girl in a house break in incident at around 7:30pm on Sunday.
At the time, the teenage girl was in company of her aged 28 years old.
The robbers forced their way in, robbed their phones at gunpoint before one of the assailants turned on the victim.
And a General Service Unit (GSU) officer was arrested after he went on a drinking spree armed with a G3 rifle while on duty.
