The Francis Atwoli led Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) has issued a cautionary nmotice to all workers against taking part in Monday’s planned anti-government protests in Nairobi led by Azimio One Kenya Coalition leader Raila Odinga.
In a quick dispatch to newsrooms, COTU also said Monday, March 20, 2023, has not been officially declared a public holiday and thus illegal.
“As the umbrella body for workers, we wish to remind workers to secure their jobs by reporting to their workstations.” COTU Deputy Secretary General Benson Okwaro said.
Okwaro deputises Secretary General Francis Atwoli.
“We urge workers to refrain from participating in any activities that may jeopardize their employment status.” Okwaro added.
Azimio legislators had earlier in the week urged employers to release their workers to join the mass action.
However, COTU is calling on workers to prioritise safeguarding their employment and to refrain from participating in any activities that may jeopardize their jobs.
“We appeal to both parties to engage in active dialogue and find a long-lasting solution that will promote economic development in the country.” Okwaro noted.
COTU is also urging the government to prioritize workers’ welfare by promoting social protection and creating a peaceful business environment that promotes economic growth.
The workers lobby group called upon president William Ruto and opposition leader Raila to exercise restraint and embrace dialogue to find a solution to the current economic challenges facing the country.
