President William Ruto has appointed former Soy Member of Parliament Caleb Kositany as the Kenya Airport Authority (KAA) board chairman.
He has been appointed for a three-year period.
Kositany’s name had shortlisted for the post of the Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) but he was not in the list of those nominated.
In a gazette notice dated March 15, 2023 president Ruto said his appointment will take effect beginning March 17, 2023.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 5 (1) (a) of the Kenya Airports Authority Act, as read together with section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, appoint— Caleb Kipkemei Kositany to be the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Kenya Airports Authority, for a period of three (3) years, with effect from the 17th March, 2023. Gazette Notice No. 10624/2021 is revoked,” the gazette notice read in part.
Kositany vied for Uasin Gishu’s governor seat in the 2022 general election but lost to Jonathan Bii alias Koti Moja at UDA nomination stage.
Kositany’s appointment comes amid planned reform process within the aviation sector by Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen.
Speaking exclusively to The Informer Media Group, Murkomen said that he has already ordered a full inventory of all KAA assets and liabilities to deter grabbing of airport land and facilitate recovery of the already illegally carved out assets.
“I have given directions to KAA to make sure that we have a full inventory of all the assets and look for resources to secure all the airstrips and airports.” The CS said.
Last year, KAA begun a Sh240 million expansion of Kisumu International Airport (KIA).
KAA Managing Director Alex Gitari said that the move is intended to tap increased domestic and global business, corporate, VIP travel, and tourism niches.
