County governments have been urged to compliment the national government’s efforts of distributing electricity to shopping centers by enabling residents start cottage industries that will uplift their lives.
Energy and Petroleum Principal Secretary Joseph Njoroge said that while the government is busy trying to make sure most areas in the country are electrified the regional governments should come in and create an enabling environment for the youths to start using the power for self gain.
Speaking in Nanyuki during a forum to collect views from the public on the progress of the Vision 2030 projects, Njoroge noted that County integrated plans should complement the national governments plans so that there is no conflict in the two.
The PS said that county governments should create security in areas where the national government has elected street light to enable a 24 hour economy to flourish but added that this might take longer than expected.
He trashed those opposed to the government’s efforts in making sure that the last mile electricity project reaches the neediest people in villages and especially those with mud and grass thatched houses.
Njoroge said that this move is very positive as these families are the most affected by the smell of kerosene and are even more prone to fires while using lantern lamps than electricity.
