Britain will for the first time have a Prime Minister of color after the former Chief Secretary to the Treasury Rishi Sunak won the Tory leadership.
Conservative Party leadership rival Penny Mordaunt dropped out of the race at the last minute.
The former chancellor won unopposed to succeed Liz Truss as Tory leader and will enter Downing Street less than two months after he lost the last race.
The 42-year-old lost to Liz Truss in September, but she resigned six weeks later. In the latest leadership contest, Sunak racked up the support of his fellow MPs early and fast.
He crossed the 100 nominations he needed long before the deadline including from MPs that had previously backed Truss or Boris Johnson.
Sunak will face the huge challenge of projecting stability after a period of historic political and financial market chaos.
He, who also has East African roots, will become the youngest Prime Minister in the history of the country for close to 200 years.
