An investigative report on the abduction of 2 Asians and their local taxi driver brought about the disbandment of the Directorate of Criminal investigations (DCI)Special Service Unit (SSU).
The DCI disbanded the elite squad with immediate effect following directives from acting Inspector General of Police Noor Gabow.
“The DCI Special Service Unit (SSU) has been disbanded with immediate effect. This follows a directive from the AG Inspector General, Mr Noor Gabow. All officers serving in the disbanded unit have been recalled to DCI headquarters for further instructions. This comes as the National Police Service prepares for reorganisation under the new administration,” DCI stated.
Gabow had met President William Ruto and briefed him on the developments of the probe and the President gave the authorisation of the disbanding.
Ruto said he wanted to know who was involved, why and when in the matter and others.
“I am the one who ordered that the Special Service Unit, which was conducting extrajudicial killings, be disbanded. We have a plan on how to secure this country so that we avoid the shame of Kenyans killed [by the police and their bodies dumped] in Yala River and others. We are going to change this country for the better,” he said during a thanksgiving service in Kericho.
The report recommended the disbanding to enhance the ongoing investigations on how the three went missing and dozens of other pending cases.
Mohammed Zaid Kidwai and Zulfiqar Khan arrived in the country in April to join Ruto’s ICT campaign but went missing on July 25 after they were abducted outside Ole Sereni Hotel with their taxi driver, Nicodemus Mwania.
CCTV footages showed the three being taken away by armed men, leaving the taxi at the scene.
The officers involved in their abduction are to start recording their statements as from today.
