A health crisis is simmering at the Baringo County Referral Hospital posed by overstayed unclaimed bodies that has overstretched the morgue storage capacity.
The hospital morgue is full beyond capacity with at least 57 bodies despite the storage capacity of 48.
As of today morning, 42 unclaimed bodies have remained unclaimed at the mortuary facility for the past three months.
Medical personnel who spoke to The Informer threatened to resort to an industrial action if the dire situation which poses grave health crisis to the medical practitioners and the neighbouring community.
Worse still, some of the freezers have broken down.
“There is a serious health crisis awaiting to blow out here. The mortuary is full beyond capacity. Some bodies are not stored in the freezers and will soon start decomposing. This predispose us and the neighbourhood to serious health risks.” An insider who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals intimated.
Out of the 42 bodies yet to be claimed, 33 are for newborns who died during or after delivery while nine were booked as unknown bodies by police from scenes of crime.
However, by the time of going to publication, hospital superintendent Dr. Gerishom Abakalwa was not available for comment
However, the hospital management has successfully obtained a court order to dispose the unclaimed bodies.
