Businessman Mohammed Kassim Salat has been charged by the Milimani Law Courts for defrauding another trader of Sh10.7million.
Kassim, who appeared before Chief Magistrate Wendy Kagendo, denied the accusation leveled against him by the state prosecutor.
He is being charged by obtaining Sh10.7million fraudulently through a fake US military tender deal.
According to the prosecution, Kasim obtained the large sum from Abdirashid Abdullahi Omar by pretending that he would join the latter to venture into a tender of supplying food and jet oil to the US military base in Somalia.
Kassim denied the charges and requested to be released on bail. The prosecution, however, went against the idea and sought the court to have him deposit his passport to avoid jumping of bail.
“The accused person should deposit his passport in court because most of his business interests are in Somali. Having the passport deposited in court does not mean that he cannot travel, when he wishes to travel he can always come to court and make an application to have the court temporarily release his passport,” Anderson Gikunda, the prosecutor’s representative stated.
The businessman was, however, against the idea, stating that he will comply with all the orders set by the court.
“The prosecution has not provided sufficient reasons as to why they want the passport. I am a Kenyan citizen,” the accused businessman stated.
The Chief magistrate nonetheless ordered Kassim to be released on a bond of Sh2million or a cash bail of Sh1 million. The case will be heard again on August 18, 2021.
